Printed handouts of these style guides are also available in the Writing Center.
Choosing a Style Format
The appropriate style format depends on the discipline for which you are writing.
Humanities:
Choose the Modern Language Association (MLA) when you write papers for classes in English, Philosophy, Literature, Linguistics, Religion, or Music.
For classes in History and Art, use Turabian or Chicago Manual Style (CMS).
Social Sciences:
The American Psychological Association (APA) provides the format you will need if you write papers for classes in Anthropology, Business, Criminal Justice, Economics, Education, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology.
Natural and Applied Sciences:
The Council of Biology Editors (CBE) style guide is what you will need for papers written for the natural science classes of Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, and Physics. You will also use CBE to write for such applied science classes as Computer Science, Engineering, Nursing, and Pharmacology.
Always ask your professor which style convention he or she prefers; professors may favor formats used by other disciplines.
