Final Examination in Applied Music:
Every student enrolled for credit in applied music must take an Applied Music Examination (Jury) at the end of each semester, whether or not he or she has presented a recital, concert performance, or ensemble performance at any time within a given semester. In general, most students can expect to have an examination of 10-15 minutes. Students auditioning for a higher performance level course, or those registered for 2-4 hours of Applied Music credit, should be prepared for an examination of 15-25 minutes.
Recital Attendance Policy:
All students in the music sequence of the Humanities degree are required to complete four (4) semesters of "PASS" credit in MUSI 1000 - Recital Attendance. It is a zero (0) credit course which allows musicians to attend each others' recitals and view the traditions of music first hand, while also showing their support by attending peers' recitals. The number of recitals needed to "PASS" are determined at the beginning of each semester by the music faculty and are communicated through WebCT. In order to graduate, all four semesters should be completed before attempting to graduate.
Recital Accompanist Fee:
Any student performing a recital with an accompanist arranged for by the music program will be assessed a $100 fee to pay the pianist for their time, talent, and contributions to the recital. In many cases, the fee is much less than the artist deserves so the students are encouraged to express their thanks by proper recognition in the recital program, professional treatment of the accompanist at rehearsals, timely delivery of printed music, and promptness at appointments with the accompanist.
Practice Time Required:
In the instrumental music areas, the amount of daily practice required is generally equated to the number of credit hours which the student is enrolled. For 1 hour of Applied Music credit, the student is expected to practice 1 hour per day. Or if enrolled for 2 hours of credit, the student is expected to practice 2 hours per day, etc. Vocalists are asked to consult with their teachers to determine the amount of actual vocal practice time that would be in accordance with sound vocal producation principles. The remainder of the time should be spent in non-vocal activities such as memorization of repertory.
Performer's Certificate:
The Performer's Certificate is the most prestigious award for performing excellence presented by the music faculty. Through this high honor, the faculty awards a special citation and recognition of excellence in musical understanding and technical proficiency as demonstrated through performance. This honor may be awarded to any student in applied music.
Ensemble Participation Requirements:
All students in music teacher certification programs or those pursuing a Humanities degree with an area to include music must enroll and make a passing grade in a major ensemble each semester they are registered as a full-time student. Only in exceptional cases may this requirement be waived at the discretion of the music faculty. Instrumental concentrations should enroll in MUEN 1122: Instrumental Ensemble and/or MUEN 1123: Chamber Ensemble. Voice and keyboard concentrations must enroll in MUEN 1121: Choral Ensemble. Participation in additional ensembles is highly encouraged by the faculty.
