Textbook: Understanding Music, by Jeremy Yudkin

Course Description: A general (non-technical) introduction into the study of Western and non-Western music time periods/styles.

Course Objective:
Students will demonstrate through listening/written analysis a basic knowledge of a variety of music time periods/ styles.

Materials: Audio/Visuals
Supplies: Loose Leaf Notebook- 2 inch
Dividers
Note taking materials (writing tool/paper)
Assignments:
1. Two oral class presentations (due Calendar sign-up date)
a. Music example/ 2-8 minutes (before 1900) with completed analysis form and composer/performing artist biography (copies/hole punched- needed for classmate notebooks)
b. Music example / 2-8 min (after 1900) with completed analysis form and composer/performing arrtist biography (copies/hole punched needed for classmate notebooks)

2. Slide Show-class presentation (due Calendar sign-up date)
a. Creative use combining visual art with music
b. Any time period/any style
c. Written (typed) related material/explanation
OR
Paper:-class presentation (due--Calendar sign-up date)
a. Minimum of 5 double - spaced word processed pages with bibliography (minimum of 3 references) Use of quotation marks are absolutely necessary!
b. Choice of music appreciation subject- style, time period, composer, performer, etc.
c.. Subject of paper/ subject to instructor approval

3. Notebook-bring to class each meeting time for additions
a. Collection of analysis forms
b. Other related class materials
c. Divisions include fundamentals, music around the world, middle ages, renaissance, baroque, classic, 19th century, 20th century- classic, jazz, popular, etc. other as needed
d. Periodic/spontaneous checks will be checked by instructor
e. Due- end of semester at instructor request

4. Pop Quizzes/Daily writing assignment
a. TBA -as needed

5. Read chapters in text as assigned.
a. Knowledge of material helpful for quizzes/daily written work

6. Extra Credit
a. Selected current movies with written review/evaluation
b. Selected music concerts/performances with written review/evaluation
c. Subject to prior approval from instructor

Grades:

75% -attendance/assignments/quizzes
25% - exams (2)

Attendance is necessary for every class meeting.
Listening to music is one of the main purposes of this class-you must be here to hear the music examples presented.
Roll will be taken within 5 minutes of class start time.
