PamWelcome to the Art Program

From Ms. Pam Price
Coordinator of Art Program

Welcome to the UTPB Visual Arts website, I hope you will visit the different links to learn more about us. We have an excellent though small art department offering a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Within these degrees we have a variety of programs offering courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, art history, ceramics, and printmaking. In addition we offer courses in graphic design with heavy emphasis on the computer and its use in the advertising and communication field.

In January 2000, we moved into a new facility designed and built for the Visual Arts. The building consists of two wings, one for two-dimensional studios and one for three-dimensional studios. The two-dimensional wing has a state of the art lecture facility with Internet connections, large screen TV and LCD for viewing art on the Internet. The drawing, painting and printmaking studios are located in this wing along with the department's spacious gallery.

Connected by a protected courtyard, the 3-D wing houses the ceramics and sculpture studios as well as a metal shop and wood shop. These large studios and shops are complimented by a wonderful outside working area where the kilns, foundry and forge are located. A large I-beam crane runs from the metal shop through the sculpture and ceramics studios to accommodate the moving of large works. All of the studios have safety showers and eye wash stations as well as ventilation systems appropriate for each area.

We are very proud of our students, many of whom have been accepted into national and regional competitions before they graduate. Once they have completed their degree at UTPB many have become teachers in public education while others have found employment with advertising agencies or gone to graduate school.

Pam Price, MFA, is the Mr. & Mrs. Louis Rochester Professor in Fine Art and teaches drawing, painting, printmaking, and papermaking. She has developed courses that utilize the computer for the creation of fine art and a course in Art Technology combining art, desktop publishing and research on the Internet. Mrs. Price’s work is in many corporate and private collections including the Arkansas Art Center, Equitable Corporation, Southwestern Bell Texas Collection, Hewlett Packard Corporation, Pettigrew Corporation, Redstone National Arsenal Bank, University of Georgia, and the Ellen Noel Art Museum.

Associate Professor Chris Stanley teaches three-dimensional design, ceramics, sculpture and web based art appreciation. His exhibition record includes national competitions, invitational exhibitions and during the fall of 1999 was an artist in residence at the Kohler Corporation in Wisconsin. Additionally Chris has been an integral part of the National Ceramics Conferences for the last several years serving as their technical advisor for computer-based presentations.

Assistant Professor Marianne Berger Woods, Ph.D. in Art History, has changed the face of Art History at UTPB. Feeling that art is best viewed in person, her classes, from Art appreciation to Women in Art to the new Art History Studies Abroad, are filled with field trips to museums and galleries in Dallas, Ft. Worth, Marfa, Santa Fe, and now Europe. Dr. Woods is currently preparing An Annotated Bibliography of New Woman Literature for publication and her other area of research is American Women Muralists. Active in professional organizations she has presented papers at a number of regional conferences at Cambridge University (UK) in Au-gust 2005. Dr. Woods’ insight and demand for quality have put her classes in such high demand, that we now have a track in the BA degree for Art History.

If you are looking for a small school where you are not just a number, where professors teach your classes and you have plenty of studio time we may be the department for you. If you have any questions please contact me through e-mail, phone or letter.
