Welcome to the home page for the Environmental Science program at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin!
Our program committed to excellence in teaching, research and community services. One of our goals at the UTPB’s Environmental Science Program is to graduate students with high standards and prepare them for careers in the environmental workforce or entry into graduate school. UTPB’s unique geological and environmental setting in the Permian Basin, which is one of the world’s largest oil and natural gas producing areas, and its vicinity from the magnificent natural arid landscapes of west Texas provide students with opportunity to apply their skills to find solutions to regional, national and international environmental problems.
Students in the Environmental Science major will study the interrelationships between the environment and organisms and the mutual effect between humans and the environment. The use of energy sources and management of the natural resources will be studied in reference to the environmental ethical responsibilities.
The highly flexible but strong curriculum of the program intended to expand knowledge and prepare professionals who will be the environmental leaders of tomorrow. The curriculum focus on integrating concepts and scientific understanding from various academic disciplines to advance understanding of regional, national and global environmental problems. It also advance understanding of the nexus between energy and water production and consumption, particularly under conditions of economic and climate change. The curriculum of the program focuses on other environmental problems such as desert compaction, salinization, decrease biodiversity or upset water system dynamics, and environmental aspects of carbon capture and storage (CCS).
