Constitution and By-Laws of

The Xi Zeta Chapter of

Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemistry Honor Society

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin

 

Article 1. Organization

    This organization shall be known as the Xi Zeta Chapter of Gamma Sigma Epsilon, National Chemistry Honor Society, at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Odessa, Texas.

   

Article 2. Purpose

    The purpose of this organization shall be to recognize outstanding students in chemistry and to promote interest and scholarship in chemistry in order to foster a professional spirit among its members.

 

        Article 3. Membership

A.    The following criteria shall be used as guideline requirements for membership.

        1.  Completion of General Chemistry (or Advanced Placement) and Organic Chemistry with at least one semester at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.  Must have completed or be enrolled in another 300 or 400 level Chemistry course.  Must have an overall GPA of at least 3.25 and a chemistry GPA of at least 3.25 (these GPAs will be calculated using all school attended).

        2.  Completion of General Chemistry (or Advanced Placement), Organic Chemistry, and three more hours of upper division chemistry courses with at least one semester at UTPB.  Must have an overall GPA of at least 3.00, a chemistry GPA of at least 3.00 and the majority approval of the UTPB Chemistry teaching staff.  (GPAs are calculated using all schools attended).

        3.  A graduating senior whose record in chemistry is satisfactory for the preceding year, but whose scholastic attainment in other subjects is slightly below the requirements of the Chapter, may be elected to membership by a unanimous vote of the Chapter and the UTPB Chemistry teaching staff.

        4.  Graduate students who are currently taking upper division chemistry courses or doing chemistry research and whose record in chemistry is satisfactory from previous studies may be elected to membership by a unanimous vote of the Chapter and the UTPB Chemistry teaching staff.

        5.   Outstanding alumni and faculty may be elected into membership by the chapter members as "Honorary Members".

 

B.    Election of Members

        1.  New members shall be chosen once a semester.

        2.  A candidate for membership will receive a written invitation to become a member of the local chapter.  All candidates must declare in writing their intentions to accept or decline within two weeks.

 

C.    Expulsion of Members

        1.  Any student nominated and approved into membership must maintain a 2.75 GPA both overall and in chemistry.

        2.  Members of the Chapter who are found guilty of conduct unworthy of the high standards of the Society by majority action of the Chapter members and the UTPB Chemistry teaching staff may be recommended to the National Executive Council of Gamma Sigma Epsilon for expulsion.
