Professor of Spanish and Kathlyn Cosper Dunagan Fellow in Humanities

Rhina Toruño-Haensly is Professor of Spanish and a Fellow in the Kathlyn Cosper Dunagan Professorship in the Humanities at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. She teaches 20th Century Latin American Literature, specializing on texts from Mexico and Central America. Professor Toruño holds two Ph.D's, one in Spanish from Indiana University, the other in Philosophy from the University of Louven, Belgium. Dr. Toruño has lectured in Europe, The United States, and Latin America in French, English, and Spanish. She was the first woman inducted into the Salvadoran Academy of Language in 2005, a branch of the Royal Academy of Spain, and is a member of the Salvadoran Academy of Sciences and Arts.

In addition, her work has appeared in several journals and books including the following: El Cuerpo, el sonido y la imagen, Notable Twentieth-Century Latin Cultura, Revista del Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y el Arte [The National Salvadoran Journal of Literature, Culture and Arts], Revista Iberoamericana, Fragmentos de Cultura, Prueba de Galera, Revista Literaria, Ventana Abierta: Revista Latina de Literatura, Arte y Cultura, and Alba de Amèrica: Revista Literaria. Dr. Toruño is currently working on a manuscript whose tentative title is: Mexican-American and Latin-American Authors Talk about their Lives and Work.
