For students:
- to inform all students declaring a major in the College of Arts and Sciences, undeclared majors, and non-degree seeking students of their Faculty Advisor's name, phone number, office number, and office hours whenever possible
- to prepare advising folders for all incoming students in the College of Arts and Sciences, undeclared students seeking a degree in the College of Arts and Sciences, and all non-degree seeking students. These folders include materials received from the Office of Admissions, degree plans with transfer hours noted, and any specific additional materials disciplines request
- to inform all students changing their major of their new Faculty Advisor's name, phone number, office number, and office hours whenever possible
- to explain degree plans for disciplines in the College of Arts and Sciences to any student who wishes this service
- to direct students to the School of Business and the School of Education for information regarding their specific programs
- to advise undeclared majors until they declare a major
- to advise non-degree seeking students while they are enrolled
- to prepare initial degree plans for those disciplines that wish this office to do so
- update degree plans
- to double-check arithmetic and other calculations
- to explain specific major degree plans and The University's General Education Requirements to either currently enrolled students or prospective students seeking this information
- to serve as a liaison between students enrolled in the nearby community colleges who plan to attend The University to be certain the students take courses which will transfer
- to assist students in finding Faculty Advisors to sign registration and other administrative forms
For faculty:
- to assist Faculty Advisors regarding courses which will transfer from other institutions and satisfy The University's General Education Requirements
- to provide student advising folders
- to provide initial advising information for specific disciplines which request this service
- to provide any service which Faculty Advisors request, commensurate with wishes of the Area Coordinator and Department Chair
- to provide annual training seminars aimed at reducing communication/calculation errors in advising, particularly those that occur close to the expected date of graduation
For The University:
- to serve as a liaison with Advising Offices of nearby community colleges to assist in a smooth transition for students plan to complete their college careers at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin
